UW College of Education No. 14 in U.S. News rankings of top education schools

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Washington College of Education No. 14 among the nation's best education schools — and No. 6 among education schools at public institutions — in its annual graduate school ratings, released March 17.

Dean Mia Tuan noted that the ranking reflects the College’s dedication to partnering with educators, schools and communities to advance educational opportunity for young people.

“We believe every child is entitled to grow up with the opportunity to nourish their talents and passions,” Tuan said. “Together with educators, schools and communities across Washington state and beyond, we work every day to make this a reality.”

U.S. News sent surveys to 393 schools granting education doctoral degrees, with 253 providing data that the publication used to calculate rankings. Measures include quality assessments based on surveys filled out by education school deans and deans of graduate studies, student selectivity, faculty resources and research activity. In the latest rankings of education specialty programs, UW had Top 20-ranked programs in seven of the eight areas in which it has programs. For the sixth consecutive year, at least three UW education specialty programs were ranked among the top 10 nationally. UW's ranked programs are:

  • Education Administration and Supervision (No. 11)
  • Curriculum and Instruction (No. 11)
  • Educational Psychology (No. 18) 
  • Education Policy (No. 14)
  • Elementary Teacher Education (No. 8) 
  • Secondary Teacher Education (No. 8)
  • Special Education (No. 7)

Among the College’s ongoing efforts to partner with local schools and communities to make progress toward educational justice, Tuan noted:

  • Over the past three years, as enrollment in the UW’s Elementary Teacher Education Program has grown increasingly diverse and exceeded 50 percent candidates of color, the program has worked to decenter whiteness in its preparation of future teachers.
  • Faculty have curated guides to support child and family well-being during school and childcare program closures — one with learning resources for children in kindergarten and younger and another for elementary school-aged children.
  • The UW Center for Educational Leadership is partnering with school districts across the country to equip principals and other instructional leaders with tools to sustain long-term improvements in teaching and learning.
  • UW learning scientists are helping lead a national initiative to make science learning more coherent and equitable, working with state science education leaders and science educators to co-design and study professional learning resources for teachers and educational leaders implementing the Next Generation Science Standards.
