Research That Matters magazine explores tipping points in education

In the 2019-20 edition of Research That Matters magazine, the University of Washington College of Education examines critical junctures of education with significant potential to improve outcomes for young people.

Stories in the new issue, "Tipping Points: Leveraging Change in Education," delve into how UW researchers are partnering with schools, practicing educators and communities to prepare and sustain a more diverse educator workforce, improve early learning experiences, support robust climate science education and more.

“The foundation of a socially and economically vibrant society is a strong public education system that nourishes every child’s talents and passions,” said UW College of Education Dean Mia Tuan in her introduction to Research That Matters. “We are honored to partner with so many individuals, communities and organizations who share our commitment to creating these pathways to success.”

Feature stories in the new issue are:

• “Driving diversity with data” — In Seattle Public Schools, strengthening support for first-year teachers is an essential element of diversifying its workforce, with research assistance from the UW College of Education.
• “The water where we swim” — Caucusing gives UW teacher candidates an opportunity to explore their own racial, sexual and gender identity — and understand how to better serve their students.
• “A skateboard ride to STEM learning” — Positive early experiences in children’s museums help set the stage for learning in school. A UW researcher is reshaping our understanding of how exhibit design can support those experiences.
• “Coaching the coaches” — A pilot project is giving early learning professionals and families with special-needs children the confidence to address challenging behaviors.
• “Principals matter” — Creating a shared vision for high-quality instruction — supported by UW’s Center for Educational Leadership — paved the way for gains in student learning and engagement in a Washington school district.
• “Leading the way to climate justice in education” — As Washington state pursues an ambitious effort to boost teaching about climate science, UW learning scientists are helping young people see themselves as problem-solvers.
