Professor launches livestream series "Parenting through COVID-19"

March 31, 2020

The new normal for millions of parents across the country involves not only adjusting to working from home, but also taking on new responsibilities for educating their children.

The stresses being placed on parents during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the launch of a new livestream video series hosted by Professor James Mazza, who teaches in the University of Washington College of Education’s school psychology program, and his wife, a licensed psychologist and certified DBT therapist, Elizabeth Dexter-Mazza.

“Parenting through COVID-19,” streamed on Facebook at 7 a.m. Pacific on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, focuses on sharing coping strategies and emotion regulation skills to aid parents in dealing with the current crisis and upheaval of parents' and children’s lives. The series started on March 25.

Mazza and Dexter-Mazza are co-authors of the book “DBT Skills in Schools: Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents” and provide training and consultation to schools on teaching mental wellness and resilience skills to students in order to increase emotion regulation and problem solving abilities.
