11 Years of Leadership, Community & Care
For 11 years, Dean Mia Tuan has helped the UW College of Education grow as a community — bringing people together around bold ideas and a shared belief in what education can make possible.
Her leadership has been ambitious, empathetic and deeply rooted in connection. She has listened, championed new ideas and created space for students, educators, researchers and community partners to shape what comes next.
As she begins a new chapter of service to the University and Washington communities, we have an opportunity to celebrate what she has helped build — and carry that spirit forward.
A gift to the Dean’s Fund helps invest in the people, ideas and partnerships that will shape the College’s next decade.
Dean Tuan has always understood that meaningful change doesn't happen alone.
During her time as dean, she has helped cultivate a College that reaches beyond its walls — strengthening relationships with schools, families, educators, community organizations and partners across Washington.
Together, this community has imagined and built initiatives like Rainier Rising, the Community Partner Fellows program, Brotherhood and Sisterhood, EduTalks and the Washington Superintendents convenings.
She championed a transformative $38 million investment in early learning. She welcomed 44 new faculty members and supported 60 faculty promotions. And soon, the Rainier Rising Early Learning Campus will begin taking shape in southeast Seattle, bringing together early learning, family resources and workforce development.
Each represents something bigger than a program or milestone.
They represent what can happen when people come together, listen to one another and believe there is a better way forward.
That is part of Dean Tuan's legacy.
And it is a legacy this community will continue to shape
Building What Comes Next
The College of Education is entering a new chapter — one grounded in everything this community has built and open to everything still ahead.
The next decade will bring new challenges, new questions and new possibilities. Some of the most important work ahead may not have a name yet.
It may begin with a student who needs an opportunity. A researcher with an idea worth pursuing. A teacher with a question. A community partner with a vision. A new possibility we haven't imagined yet.
The Dean’s Fund gives the College room to respond — to listen, to experiment, to support people and to say yes when an important opportunity emerges.
That is how a legacy grows.
They represent what can happen when people come together, listen to one another and believe there is a better way forward.
