Finding the strength to make change, push for truth and walk with heads held high was the message of last week’s “Teaching for Black Lives” event.
Hosted by the University of Washington’s Banks Center for Educational Justice, the gathering of current teachers, future teachers and community members listened to the experiences of Black students and their allies.

When “A Place Called School” was published in 1984, the largest on-scene study of U.S. schools ever conducted laid out an ambitious agenda for redesigning schools piece-by-piece, with close partnership among educators and families as the most meaningful way to improve school.
The groundbreaking study by the late University of Washington College of Education faculty member John Goodlad visited 1,000 classrooms nationwide to talk with teachers, students, administrators, parents and other community members.

Special education teachers frequently assume formal or informal leadership roles and responsibilities across disciplines, yet little research exists on the experiences and needs of teacher leaders within the diverse field of special education.
