Work broadening high-quality early learning bolstered by grant

The University of Washington College of Education’s work to expand access to high-quality early learning opportunities across the country is being strengthened with a $10 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Over the next four years, the grant will support the College in generating tools and methods needed to launch sustainable high-quality practices in pre-kindergarten programs, particularly among low-income communities.

Years later, Traverso’s enthusiasm for teaching is the driving force that led her to the UW College of Education. She knew her college had to have an education program, and among her top choices, the UW stood out.

Responding to adversity

When her mother was diagnosed with stage four cancer, Anna Maher chose to respond with resilience and determination.

Maher, a high school freshman at the time, was shaken by the news, yet her mother encouraged her and her sisters to stay focused on making the most of their education.

“I think that her instilling motivation and drive made us into the strong people that we are today,” said Maher, now a University of Washington senior. Maher’s drive to excel academically led her to serve as a high school teaching assistant, helping younger students with their studies.
