The University of Washington College of Education will celebrate more than 400 graduating students during commencement ceremonies on June 11.

Speaking to the Class of 2016 is Gloria Ladson-Billings, a 1972 graduate of the College who holds the Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education at University of Wisconsin School of Education.

Twenty-one University of Washington College of Education doctoral students will discuss their research projects on May 13, with topics that include how elementary students streamline math problem-solving, the role of teacher ratings of externalizing behaviors to predicting rates of suspensions and academic attainment, and the challenges facing immigrant families of children with developmental disabilities.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Washington College of Education No. 8 among the nation's best education schools in its annual graduate school ratings, released March 16.

UW College of Education again ranked No. 2 among education schools at public institutions in the U.S., behind only the University of Wisconsin-Madison (at No. 4 overall) in the 2017 edition of the U.S. News ratings. This is the third consecutive year that UW has been ranked second among public institutions by U.S. News.

As a teacher at a San Francisco preschool, Kathleen Kuhl experienced first-hand the gap between the daily practice of teachers and policies created from afar.

“While teaching I felt that I was experiencing every facet of the field of early childhood education that makes it complicated and profoundly challenging and deeply rewarding,” Kuhl said. “All throughout my time teaching I felt cut off from any sort of policy or leadership decisions, and increasingly confronted with the differing quality of programs for children from different neighborhoods in San Francisco.”

Doctoral research presentations set for Feb. 5

Ten University of Washington College of Education doctoral students will discuss their research projects on February 5, with topics spanning translingual preschool environments, how teachers can learn from students, and ethnic identity development.   

The Research and Inquiry Presentations, a major milestone in each Ph.D. candidate's studies at the College of Education, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Miller Hall Room 212.

Over the past six years, Stephanie Gardner has helped lead a sea change in achievement by historically underrepresented students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) majors at the University of Washington. As director for the Pacific Northwest Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation at UW, the College of Education alumna and current doctoral student is opening pathways into STEM fields.
