AERA Highlight: Strengthening argumentation in environmental science

Learning how to use evidence in making an argument is a critical skill for students to build, yet difficulties frequently arise when discipline-based learning goals conflict with schooling tasks.

University of Washington College of Education researchers took on that challenge by partnering with teachers of a project-based AP Environmental Science course to develop and revise design principles for creating "material tools" that can adequately scaffold disciplinary practice and support formative assessment, while also helping students' create better arguments.

The town of Faraday has a problem.

Its citizens are interested in building a magnetic train to make it easier to connect with other towns, but they need to figure out how to make the technology work.

That’s where the town’s scientists—in this case a group of two dozen Seattle 3rd, 4th and 5th graders enrolled in a summer learning program in the Beacon Hill neighborhood—come in.

It’s their job to collect evidence about how magnets work, determine whether the technology could be used to power a train and then explain their findings to the citizens of Faraday.

AERA Highlight: Motivation and the STEM gender gap

As attention continues to focus on the persistent gender gap in STEM fields, a new study from the University of Washington College of Education sheds light on the role of motivation.

In exploring four key subconstructs of motivation shown to influence students’ STEM outcomes (identity, utility, self-efficacy and interest) the UW researchers found that relationships between motivation constructs and STEM outcomes aren’t moderated by gender, providing additional evidence that gaps aren’t a result of inherent differences between male and female students.
