The theme of this year's AERA meeting is "Toward Justice: Culture, Language, and Heritage in Education Research and Praxis."

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Washington College of Education No. 6 among the nation's best education schools in its annual graduate school ratings, released March 10, rising one place from last year's ranking.

UW College of Education ranked No. 2 among education schools at public institutions in the U.S., behind only the University of Wisconsin-Madison (at No. 5 overall) in the 2016 edition of the U.S. News ratings. This is the second consecutive year that UW has been ranked second among public institutions by U.S. News.

Teacher Education by Design, a new online community for educators created by the University of Washington College of Education, seeks to change that status quo by engaging teachers in a cycle of continuously learning about and improving their practice.

Eleven of the University of Washington College of Education's doctoral students will discuss their research projects on Feb. 6, with topics including civics instruction during a presidential election, teacher orientation and perceptions of language policy, and biracial identity development.

The Research and Inquiry Presentations, a major milestone in each Ph.D. candidate's studies at the College of Education, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Miller Hall Room 212. Presentations are open to the public.

Onnie Rogers: New faculty profile

Growing up, Onnie Rogers experienced first-hand how powerful stereotypes could be in shaping how children perceived their own abilities. That experience inspired Rogers, who recently joined the University of Washington College of Education as a research assistant professor, to pursue research on identity development among urban youth. Her work examines how cultural norms, expectations and stereotypes influence how youth see themselves, particularly in the context of schooling and education.
