The UW ABA Program provides a Master’s degree in Special Education, the BACB Verified Course Sequence (VCS), and supervision necessary to apply to sit for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) exam.  Students not needing a master's degree can elect to take just the VCS.

Students may choose to complete the VCS in one year by taking two courses each quarter for four quarters (fall, winter, spring, summer), or in two years by taking one class each quarter.  Students wishing to earn a Master's degree in Special Education complete an additional three-quarters of coursework.

All classes meet in the late afternoon (typically, at 5 pm PST) to accommodate teachers and others working full time.

BACB Verified Course Sequence

Capstone Project

The purpose of the Capstone project is to give students the opportunity to integrate many of the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis within the context of a planned intervention to change the behavior of a person with disabilities in a positive way.  Students complete Capstone Projects across the school year with support from their practicum supervisor and faculty advisor. All students present their completed Capstone projects at an annual Student Capstone Conference held at the end of Spring Quarter.

Master's Examination

As partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Education (M.Ed) degree, students must pass a Master's Examination. This exam is a comprehensive examination covering all Applied Behavior Analysis content in the program. Students take the Master’s Exam during their last quarter of the program.  This exam is not the same as the BACB exam – the Master’s exam is a University of Washington requirement fulfilling part of the requirements for a Master’s degree.
