University District

Seattle's University District or “U-District” is one of the city's oldest and most diverse neighborhoods. Boasting a unique mix of ethnic restaurants, coffeehouses, retail shops and other services, the neighborhood caters to student needs.

Getting Around

UW students can drive, take the bus, or walk to and from campus. Drivers can park on-campus during classes or meetings. Whether you live in downtown Seattle, a nearby suburb, or an island, the bus system and ferry system are convenient.

Famed for our award winning faculty, the UW boasts six Nobel Prize winners, fourteen “genius award” fellows from the MacArthur Foundation, and two Pulitzer Prize winners. numerous literary awards, such as the National Book Award. We have 57 members in the National Academy of Sciences, 56 members in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and 48 members in the Institute of Medicine. UW: A Leader in Research Funding

Due to the accomplishments of our top notch faculty, the UW receives more federal research funding than any other American public university. Federal grants represent nearly 80 percent of UW research funding and, in 1974, the research awards totaled just over $90 million.
