Daniel Iyall was a dedicated teacher, inspiring coach, and compassionate community leader. Born of Yakama Indian Nation, Iyall grew up in Olympia, WA on the Nisqually Indian Reservation. Iyall earned a BA from Central Washington and an MS from Washington State, which enabled him to become a transformational teacher for more than 35 years.
Iyall devoted his life to education in multiple ways and multiple settings. During his life, Iyall had a positive influence on thousands of students and families in his communities. He coached baseball, basketball, and football at four Washington state high schools, including Coulee City High School, Deer Park High School, Oroville High School, and University High School. He was inducted into the Washington State High School Coach’s Hall of Fame for his teaching at University High School.
Yet Iyall was just as widely respected for his work in the state and nation on Indian education. The Title VII Indian Education Program in the Spokane area was initiated by Iyall, who developed and directed the program for 16 years. The program creates stronger culturally significant educational opportunities for American Indian and Alaska Native youth. Great teachers, like Iyall, are the most significant factor in ensuring students’ success in school, particularly children in culturally diverse, poverty-impacted communities.
The University of Washington College of Education has established an endowment, which will provide annual funds to Native American students who are in the Master’s in Teaching program. Initiated by passionate and dedicated former students of Iyall, this endowment hopes to instill and honor his dedication to education and all Native American community and tribes in the region.
This endowed fund, which will last in perpetuity, will support meritorious Native American teacher candidates who seek to close the achievement gaps for Native American and other underrepresented populations. Many, if not most, UW Native American graduates return to their communities and provide important leadership and service in tribal businesses and government. This endowed fund is just part of the College of Education’s efforts to create sustainable pathways for teachers and create scalable solutions to real world problems in education.
The Daniel Iyall Native American Teacher Education Fellowship will ensure that the UW College of Education’s research, training, and services are fully leveraged for the benefit of Native American communities and create a the next generation transformational teachers, just like Daniel Iyall.
