The need to integrate technology and education is greater than ever, something new IT director Tom Frizelle, who earned his PhD in educational communications and technology at UW, knows well.

“I look forward to working collaboratively with faculty and staff in the College to support innovation and improve teaching, learning and research with technology,” Frizelle said.

Professor Carol Davis, who led the search committee, said Frizelle's experience will help address the growing needs of the faculty and graduate students around technology and instructional design.

"We have restructured the director position to include systematically supporting the integration of technology into the academic and research work of the College,” Davis said.

Frizelle previously served as director of technology and integration at The Overlake School in Redmond since 2003. In addition to overseeing the technology infrastructure at the school, he served on the school leadership team and led a variety of major initiatives around teaching and learning with technology.

Frizelle earned his bachelor's in elementary education and a master's in curriculum and instructional technology from Iowa State University, where he also worked at the Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching, mentoring faculty and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in educational technology.

"Those early experiences teaching and learning, particularly with technology, have shaped my professional passions," said Frizelle, who in 2012 earned his Ph.D. in educational communications and technology from the University of Washington.

Frizelle considers himself an outdoor junkie and feels breaks from technology are important.  He enjoys trail running, hiking, backpacking and traveling with his family in their VW campervan.
