After starting her career teaching middle and high school English and history, Jessica Rigby turned to research, concentrating on understanding the role of school and district leaders in the implementation of policy, classroom instruction, improving teacher practice and focus on equity. She earned her bachelor's in history from Oberlin College, a master's in education policy from Stanford University and a PhD in policy, organizations, measurement and evaluation from the University of California, Berkeley.

Large-Scale Study to Evaluate the Impact of Principal Professional Development

Beginning in 2015, a coalition of research and education institutions will launch a large-scale, randomized controlled trial evaluation of principal professional development funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. She is returning to Seattle after earning her PhD in English education at New York University, where she wrote her dissertation on the relationship between teachers' perceived needs of students and their practice in urban, all-male schools.

Alum named Seattle Public Schools superintendent

Dr. Larry Nyland, a distinguished local educator who earned his Ph.D. in educational leadership from University of Washington's College of Education, has been selected to lead Seattle Public Schools on a permanent basis after serving as interim superintendent since August. The Seattle School Board approved the move during its Dec. 10 meeting.

Alumnus in running for 'Nobel Prize' of teaching

Noah Zeichner '04 is one of 50 finalists for a $1 million award designed to be the Nobel Prize of education.

Zeichner, who teaches social studies and Spanish at Seattle's Chief Sealth International High School, will find out in March whether he is the recipient of the Global Teacher Prize sponsored by Varkey GEMS Foundation. The award is designed to elevate the teaching profession by honoring educators who spark learning, prepare students to be good global citizens, and encourage others to become teachers.
