Eleven of the University of Washington College of Education's doctoral students will discuss their research projects on Feb. 6, with topics including civics instruction during a presidential election, teacher orientation and perceptions of language policy, and biracial identity development.

The Research and Inquiry Presentations, a major milestone in each Ph.D. candidate's studies at the College of Education, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Miller Hall Room 212. Presentations are open to the public.

Growing up, Onnie Rogers experienced first-hand how powerful stereotypes could be in shaping how children perceived their own abilities. That experience inspired Rogers, who recently joined the University of Washington College of Education as a research assistant professor, to pursue research on identity development among urban youth. Her work examines how cultural norms, expectations and stereotypes influence how youth see themselves, particularly in the context of schooling and education.

The five-year award is given to a select number of early career scholars who have demonstrated exceptional promise as researchers and teachers. The award will provide more than $620,000 in support of the assistant professor's research in education policy.
