THE ROLE The Issaquah School District (ISD) is at a moment of transition and transformation. Situated just East of Seattle, there are 110 square miles to the District nestled between mountains and lakes. The Superintendent started in July 2022 and comes from an executive, non-profit, government, PK-12 public education, and business background. Issaquah School District has a rich history of excellence in academics and offers a variety of programs that meet the diverse passions, aspirations, and talents of every student, every day. Since the early 2000s, ISD was on a steady growth trajectory in enrollment but like many Washington State districts, saw a decline during COVID. There are approximately 19,000 students attending 26 schools and specialized schools/programs, drawing students from Bellevue, Issaquah, Newcastle, Renton and Sammamish. The District is mid-way through a multi-year plan to right-size the budget and launch an inaugural strategic plan. THE PERSON (AKA POSITION SUMMARY) Issaquah School District (ISD) is seeking a Senior Advisor for Strategy to engage, co-create and build capacity with and across diverse stakeholders in support of access, opportunity, equity, inclusion, innovation and change management. The Senior Advisor ensures the district’s commitment to equity and inclusion is integrated into all facets of collaboration across the district. The Senior Advisor will work with the Superintendent to develop a strategic plan and provide vision, leadership, and direction for the district to implement the plan and monitor progress. As a Cabinet member, the Senior Advisor will work directly with the Superintendent and Cabinet, partner with the community, and prioritize and align executive leadership time and talent in support of the strategic plan, Board priorities and the District’s Executive Limitations and Ends. This duration of this role will be effective January 3, 2023 through June 30, 2024, with extension options pending project and staffing needs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Strategy Development, Implementation and Monitoring o Facilitate and coordinate the strategic planning, implementation and monitoring process in alignment with Executive Limitations and Board direction, and across stakeholder groups. o Assess operational and strategic performance, conduct external research and data analysis to inform organizational decisions and strategic planning. o Measure and track project performance, specifically to analyze the successful completion of short and long-term goals, and drive continuous learning and improvement cycles. o Establish effective project management, communication and change management expectations for implementation plans. • Executive Leadership Partnership o Design Cabinet meetings to support the group in leading across the most critical strategic and operational issues, making decisions, monitoring organizational progress, and cascading communication throughout the organization. o Ensure Superintendent and Cabinet efforts are aligned to Board Executive Limitations and Ends Monitoring Reports and meeting agendas to maintain compliance and high performance. o Provide support and partnership to the Superintendent to align priorities and time to the strategic plan. o Attend all board meeting and prepare related materials to support the Superintendent. o Analyze, prioritize and provide options to resolve and restore complex problems across the community. • Engagement and External Partnership o Act on behalf of the District and Superintendent as a liaison to the community, agencies, public events and Issaquah School District Families. o Lead stakeholders in support of the District’s commitment to equity and inclusion throughout the process. o Utilize methods for solution ideation with those are closest to the problem. o Develop partnerships with external organizations that are mutually beneficial to students and families. • District and System Responsibilities o Ensure briefings, project deliverables, communications and presentations adhere to quality standards. o Ensure compliance in all policies and adhere to Governing Policies and District Regulations and Procedures. o Consults with counsel as appropriate. o Perform other duties and responsibilities as the Superintendent may assign. o Maintain consistent attendance and conforms to regular work hours specified under contract. QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master’s Degree, or higher, in Business, Educational Administration, Policy, Public Administration or related field preferred. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of ten (10) years of successful work leading complex projects in public education systems. Prior experience teaching in PK-12, coaching and training adult learners, management consulting and working in highly confidential positions highly preferred. Further, the individual will possess the: • Ability to exercise independent decision-making abilities, organize and manage multiple time sensitive tasks, and facilitate resolution of difficult and/or delicate parent, staff and community issues. • Ability to successfully advance equity and inclusion across a system and all functions. • Ability to quickly identify a problem, gather relevant input and develop a plan or course of action. • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with diverse people, including those in racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities. • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and capacity to manage high stress situations. • Ability to research, analyze, and interpret data, rules and regulations, codes, statutes, and laws to support effective practices. • Ability to utilize software and technology for recordkeeping, presentations and trainings, and fluent communication. • Ability to maintain and exercise superior judgment balancing confidentiality and transparency. • Skills in leading professional development and knowledge of adult learning needs. • Skills in establishing systems that are efficient, effective and customer oriented. • Skills in team leadership, supervision, and management of people. • Skills in developing and managing programs and resources that align organizational goals. • Knowledge of project management, analytical tools and methods of research, evaluation, and impact assessment. • Knowledge of user-designed and continuous improvement methods and tools. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES: Valid WA State driver’s license and appropriate insurance required. Must maintain as current any certification or license listed herein and held at hire date. Teaching, ESA or Administrative certification preferred. Project Management Professional (PMP) or Lean Six Sigma Certification preferred.
