The School-Wide Support Teacher (a non-exempt position) plays an active role in making the school function smoothly through teacher substitution, break coverage, assistance during complex projects or transitions, and providing additional support. They demonstrate a passion to teach and help students coming from diverse backgrounds, have the ability to handle several tasks at the same time, and provide a nurturing environment where children are appropriately supported through physical, emotional, and cognitive development in an inclusive classroom setting. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS · AA degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, child development, Human Development, Family Studies, or related field. BA/MA preferred. · Knowledge and experience in the philosophy and practices of early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practices. · Two years of experience working in an early childhood program serving infants, toddlers, or preschoolers in a licensed childcare facility. · Anti-bias education approach as a foundation to align practices. · Communicate effectively with children, families, and other staff members · Provide quality, nurturing care to children enrolled in the program. · Demonstrate skills to properly address the developmental needs of toddlers and/or preschoolers RESPONSIBILITIES The School Wide-Support Teacher reports to the Associate Director. Duties include, but are not limited to: In the Classroom · Sit with children during mealtimes modeling good nutritional habits. · Respond quickly in a soothing and tender manner to preschoolers’ and Toddlers’ distress. · Maintain a safe, clean, environment, practices good personal hygiene and hand washing, and assures the well-being and safety of all the children in that environment including children’s personal hygiene needs (especially attentive to them during routines such as toileting, diapering, and hand washing). · Maintain a positive, calm attitude and a pleasant, soothing voice, and models this attitude and voice for parents and others working or volunteering in the program. · Use the playground as an extension of the classroom. · Assist with facilitating of activities, including daily activities, field trips, selecting and arranging equipment and materials in the classroom · Model developmentally appropriate practices for parents in caring for their young children. · Assist in planning and implementing special events · As needed, assist with organization of each day’s activities to provide children with a variety of experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as a sense of self and a feeling of belonging to the group. · As needed, assist with developmental screenings and ongoing assessments of toddlers to determine motor, language, social, cognitive, and emotional skills. · As needed, assist with comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including ongoing observations, examples of the child’s work, and developmental continuum. · As needed, assist with implement of all areas of the curriculum. Communication · Maintain an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child and their family, other FLS teachers, ECE Director, and Associate Director · Encourage each child’s family to be actively involved in FLS · Promote parent-child bonding and nurturing parent-child relationships Safety & Discipline · Utilizes disciplinary measures appropriate as outlined in the FLS Behavior Management Policy. · Provides for the physical safety of each child from arrival time until departure time. · Observes children to detect signs of illness, injury, abuse, neglect, emotional disturbance, or other special needs, and reports these signs immediately to the ECE Director, Associate Director, or person in charge. WORKING CONDITIONS / NATURE OF WORK · The staff:child ratio will not exceed 2:20 for each preschool teacher and staff:child ratio will not exceed 2:14 for each toddler teacher. · Must stay current on State/Merit/Stars requirements. · Attend staff training and meetings when necessary, deemed by ECE Director/Associate Director · Possible exposure to blood and bodily fluids or tissues · Possible exposure to communicable diseases · Job requires sitting for long periods of time, standing for long periods of time, as well as stooping, squatting, running, and general up and down motions from child level to adult level. · The ability to supervise preschoolers/toddlers and ensure a safe environment including the ability to monitor and respond to events going on at all times in the classroom and at recess. The physical ability to move quickly to ensure their safety or others in the environment. · Must be able to lift 55 pounds · Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency or a crisis.
