Position Description:
The Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) program aims to create an inclusive and diverse community where all students feel supported and able to succeed. As such, the MSDS program is seeking an intern to assist with student success initiatives including contributing to event planning and supporting the MSDS Diversity and Inclusion Committee, delivering career services to assist students as they navigate a remote fall recruiting season and providing admissions and marketing assistance to the MSDS team. The MSDS Intern will work closely with MSDS program staff and can independently research best practices and recommend ways to increase student engagement and build a cohesive community.
The MSDS program is unique in the diversity of its student population. In a previous year's cohort, 48% of the students identify as women, 19% are first generation students, and 12% are domestic underrepresented students. This position will help ensure that all MSDS students are connected to the information and resources that will best help them succeed both in and out of the classroom.
The MSDS program is committed to offering high-quality, paid internships to graduate students. The intern will have the opportunity to engage with open-ended questions, meet with campus partners, and pursue other professional development opportunities according to their interests. This is a great opportunity for a graduate student who is interested in pursuing a career in higher education administration, academic advising, and/or academic/student affairs.
Responsibilities
• Help coordinate incoming student and current student welcome communication
• Support planning and execution of the quarterly social mixers
• Share content on different platforms (Microsoft Teams, Twitter, Facebook,
Instagram, and LinkedIn)
• Update and maintain student databases, Canvas sites, and notes
• Take meeting minutes and support the work of the MSDS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
• Research appropriate campus events and resources for weekly student newsletter
• Look for new and creative ways to build student and alumni community
• Help plan and execute online admissions events
• Engage with prospective students and applicants via communication channels such as
e-mail and social media
• Assist in the managing and processing of applications to the MSDS program
• Work closely with MSDS staff on a variety of short- and long-term admissions projects
Required Skills & Experience
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• An interest in higher education administration, student development, and/or
academic/student affairs
• Passionate about participating in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
• Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a team of professionals
• Dependable and able to meet deadlines
• Creative with keen attention to details
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office / Google Suite especially Excel
Preferred Skills & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree
• Experience working with diverse student populations
Time & Commitment
This position is for Autumn Quarter 2022 with the possibility of an extension for additional quarters. This internship will be paid hourly as a Graduate Student Assistant. This position is flexible and can accommodate the intern’s academic schedule. Most work will be completed remotely, with the exception of in-person meetings and on-campus events. At least two online meetings per week (one 1:1 with supervisor, one full staff meeting) are required.
