New website offers tools for improved STEM teaching

A new website created by UW Institute for Science & Math Education researchers offers STEM educators tools that leverage the best knowledge from both research and practice. The STEM Teaching Tools website will share new tools for practitioners on an ongoing basis to support implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Schools gather at UW to build P-3 education efforts

Most children in the United States grow up in communities where concern for their education doesn't start until they enter the K-12 school system. Yet by that time, a vast amount of mental development has already taken place. That's the motivating factor behind the National P-3 Institute hosted by the College of Education Oct. 27-30. Fifteen school systems from every corner of the country gathered to begin improving and integrating the education children receive from birth through their elementary school years.

College helps bring inclusive education to Bulgaria

Professor Douglas Cheney is currently in Bulgaria to help the nation increase the number of students with disabilities who are included in its public school classrooms, building upon the College of Education's groundbreaking research in inclusive education.

Hale '66 honored for mental health work

Carolyn Hale '66 was named the state of Washington's Professional Woman of the Year in Mental Health during an awards ceremony on Oct. 23 in Seattle. After her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia, Hale started Circle of Friends for Mental Health to promote a positive outlook on working with mental illnesses. Hale earned her master's in curriculum development at UW.

Alumnus launched K-12 civics initiative

Web Hutchins '97 believes Seattle can be a national model for civics education and is working to make that a reality as founder and director of Civics for All. In 2011, Hutchins formally launched the initiative, which calls for increased civics and media literacy in each grade, district-wide voting in mock elections each November, and professional development related to civics education.

Doctoral students to present research

Sixteen of the College's doctoral students will discuss their research projects this Friday, Nov. 7, with topics ranging from designing community in online collaborative spaces for K-12 students to the measurement of teachers' sense of self-efficacy to how elementary teachers can facilitate productive science talk.

Achievements

Zeichner: Children of a Lesser God published

Professor Kenneth Zeichner recently published his book Children of a Lesser God: Linguistic Diversity and Social Justice in Teacher Education in Portugal. The book is about the education of students whose language of instruction is not their mother tongue. The book argues that all children, regardless of their socio-economic, biological or cultural identity, have the right to quality education, one of which is inclusive, encompasses diversity and strives for social justice.

Kauerz talks at National Press Club

On Oct. 16, Kristie Kauerz, research assistant professor, spoke at the public release of “Leading Pre-K-3 Learning Communities: Competencies for Effective Principle Practice" at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The National Association of Elementary School Principals developed and updated the resource guide, which outlines competencies and specific strategies for principals to build and support a successful P-3 school continuum.

CEL launches leadership work in Hawaii, Florida

Through support from the Castle Foundation, and in collaboration with the New Teacher Center, the Center for Educational Leadership will begin a project in Hawaii supporting principals as effective instructional leaders. CEL will use its principal supervisor curriculum to increase the ability of principal supervisors to improve the instructional leadership performance of principals, as well as the UW District Leadership Design Lab’s performance management surveys.

CEL also began a school leadership project with the Florida Department of Education on Oct. 15 with an opening institute focused on classroom observation, analysis and instructional leadership. 150 school leaders are taking part in the project to support the Florida's goal of scaling up school leadership effectiveness throughout the state.

Schwartz, Davis travel to Vietnam

Ilene Schwartz, director for the Haring Center for Applied Research and Training in Education, and Carol Davis, associate professor of education, recently visited Hanoi, Vietnam for a week to train staff in the psychology and psychiatry departments at the National Pediatric Hospital. During the visit, they worked on implementing interventions for young children with autism. Schwartz and Davis also presented at the National Psychiatric Conference in Hanoi about services provided for children with autism and related disorders.

Zeichner gives Sachs Lecture on teacher preparation

Professor Kenneth Zeichner was featured in the Sachs Lecture Series of Teacher’s College at Columbia University on Oct. 21. In his lecture “The Struggle for the Soul of Teaching and Teacher Education: Imagining a More Democratic Future for Teacher Preparation in the U.S.” Zeichner discussed the current situation in U.S. teacher education and presented a proposal on improving its quality, emphasizing that universities should be more involved in efforts to deregulate and “disrupt” teacher education.

Banks gives keynote, featured in new video

James Banks, Kerry and Linda Killinger Endowed Chair in Diversity Studies, delivered the keynote address at the 9th International Balkan Education and Science Conference Congress, “Diversity and Citizenship Education in Multicultural Nations.” The event was held at Trakya University in Edirne, Turkey.

Banks also is one of 18 educators featured on “Inside the Academy," a website that features interviews with America’s most distinguished and influential educational researchers in a format inspired by “Inside the Actors Studio.” Watch the interview with Banks online.

Presentations, book on education needs of Native American students

Virginia Berninger, professor of learning sciences and human development, gave a keynote for the National Institute of Learning and Development in SeaTac on "Translating interdisciplinary research on dysgraphia, dyslexia, OWL LD, and dyscalculia into educational assessment-instruction links," with emphasis on multicultural sensitivity. As part of the presentation, Mary E. Fertakis, M.Ed. Educational Policy Studies and member of the Tukwilla School Board, explained what her district has done to honor the Duwamish and is currently doing to meet the educational needs of Native American children and youth.

The book "Narrowing the Achievement Gap for Native American Students: Paying the educational debt," co-edited by Berninger, was published at the same time with a number of faculty, staff and graduate students at the College contributing to the book.

Bridge Conference 2014: Making Learning Personal

Professor Megan Bang, doctoral student Lorena Guillen, and 3DL research assistant John Benner presented at the Bridge Conference 2014: Making Learning Personal. Bang presented “Indigenous Knowledge Systems and STEAM Education,” Guillen presented “Learning to Partner with Families and Communities in Preservice Teacher Education,” and Benner presented “Social and Emotional Learning After School.”

Jegatheesan gives keynote, honored for service

Brinda Jegatheesan, associate professor of learning sciences and human development, received the 2014 President’s Award for Outstanding Service to the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations. Earlier, Jegatheesan was a keynote speaker at a conference in Taipei, Taiwan, discussing “Should children experience wild animals in zoos, circuses, sea-worlds and other similar environments? Ignoring the ethics of captivity and coercion on children’s moral development no more.” She also was a keynote speaker at a conference in Tokyo, presenting “Role of Companion Animals in Child Development Across Cultures.”

Joseph speaks at White House word gap event

Gail Joseph, associate professor of educational psychology, participated in an Oct. 16 event at the White House as part of President Obama's "Bridge the Word Gap" initiative.

Rapides Foundation Report Highlights CEL's Work in Louisiana

The Rapides Foundation’s recently published 2013 annual report and video highlights the Center for Educational Leadership’s professional development work with school districts in Central Louisiana. School leaders attribute the recent success in state rankings to the partnership with the Foundation and CEL. "When we began this work we were ranked 35th in the state. In recent years, we have consistently ranked 11th or 12th in student achievement," said Diane Marcantel, personnel and school improvement supervisor for the Allen Parish School District. "It's easy to get everyone on board when success is clear."
