John Goodlad, author of 'A Place Called School,' dies

John GoodladJohn Goodlad, influential educational researcher and teacher whose work over the last 60 years has had a major impact on schools and the education of educators, died Nov. 29 at his home in Seattle. The late UW College of Education professor was 94.

Good food is fuel for learning says Christine Tran, a doctoral student studying Educational Leadership, Policy & Organizations. She's teaching kids about nutrition-related subjects as a volunteer educational leader for the Pike Place Market Education Program.

Math innovation paper wins distinguished research award

Elham Kazemi, Geda and Phil Condit Professor in Science & Math Education, has received the Washington Educational Research Association's 2014 Distinguished Paper Award for a paper describing the UW College of Education's innovative work in math education at Lakeridge Elementary.

Alumnus pens book about testing

Jesse Hagopian, a 2006 MIT graduate who teaches history at Garfield High School, recently published More than a Score: The New Uprising Against High-Stakes Testing. The book, edited by Hagopian, is a collection of essays, poems, speeches and interviews from educators, parents, activists and researchers about high-stakes testing.

On the move: Alstad '14 and Edstrom '00

Zachary Alstad '14 has been named a research associate at Landmark College and Leihua (Van Schoiack) Edstrom '00 has been named associate professor at Northwest College. Alstad will be involved in two NSF-funded projects on technology and learning disabilities while Edstrom will teach in the counseling psychology program at Northwest. Both Alstad and Edstrom were advised by Ginger Berninger.

Remixing Frankenstein

In her 11 years as a teacher, Kate McMullen has regularly found herself called upon to serve as a leader. This past summer, the UW Master's in Instructional Leadership student found herself in another leadership position as one of 12 teachers invited to New York for Performance at the Center.

PhD student honored for research on gifted children

Rachel Chung, a third-year doctoral student in learning sciences and human development received first place in Graduate Student Work in Progress at the annual convention of the National Association for Gifted Children. Chung presented her study "The Perceived Influence of Parental Expectations on Asian American Women Who Entered College Early" at the convention.

Achievements

Learning disabilities paper published

The paper "Computer handwriting, spelling, and composing instruction for students with specific learning disabilities in grades 4 to 9," co-authored by Professor Ginger Berninger, recently was published in Computers and Education. Highlights and audiovisual slides are available online.

Gifted child paper, findings published

Congratulations to authors Maren Halvorsen, Nancy Hertzog and Sarah Childers, whose paper University of Washington Transition School: College Preparation and Teaching for Transformation was the second-most accessed article in Gifted Child Today from September 2013 through September 2014.  Also read key findings discovered from the Robinson Center’s Study of Early Entrance Graduates after 35 Years, authored and presented by Rachel Chung and Nancy Hertzog.
