World Affairs Council Names Noah Zeichner 2013 – 2014 World Educator

The World Affairs Council just named College alum Noah Zeichner their 2013-14 World Educator. Each year, the Council honors a Pacific NW K-12 teacher who demonstrates leadership in connecting students to the world and contributes to the development of new programs and resources that enable other teachers to do the same. Noah teaches IB Theory of Knowledge and Global Visionaries and serves as the Global Education Resource Teacher at Chief Sealth International School. More»

Distinguished Graduate Award 2012 – 2013

Gene Edgar

Dr. Eugene “Gene” Edgar plans to retire in June 2013. Edgar has worked at the University of Washington since 1972. “In terms of service, we all owe a debt to the common good, to the public,” Edgar asserts. “I think that public service and scholarship, to actually engage with the community as partners, is really important. I’ve learned that here and, again, without lots of preplanning, I’ve had opportunities to do good.” More»

Challenges for Urban School Leadership in the United States

After significant research into how leaders navigated accountability systems, Dr. Michael Knapp (faculty) and Dr. Susan B. Feldman (alum) discovered that leaders in schools that serve populations that have historically struggled, found remarkably similar ways of responding to district and state accountability systems, that served internal accountability purposes. Specifically, these leaders found ways to use what the outside world demanded of the school as occasions for advancing the school’s own learning improvement agenda. Their work received a Journal of Educational Administration Award. More»

UW, Danforth, CEL Speak at the 2013 WASA/AWSP Summer Conference

UW associate professor, Dr. Meredith I. Honig, delivered a keynote speech at the 2013 WASA/AWSP Summer Conference, one of the largest conferences in Washington state for principals and superintendents. Stephen Fink, Jennifer McDermott and Ann O'Doherty also presented at the event held June 23-25, 2013 at the Spokane Convention Center. More»
