Intellectual and developmental disabilities
Professor Roberts’ is committed to partnering with teachers and schools to advance high-quality, inclusive instruction for K-12 students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She uses mixed methods research to examine and promote access to the general curriculum for students with extensive support needs, particularly in literacy and science. Through this mixed methods scholarship, she hopes to identify what strategies best support student learning and how those practices are situated within complex school and classroom contexts.
Currently she is leading a U.S. Department of Education-funded project focused on increasing inclusive science instruction for middle school students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For this project Professor Roberts is collaborating with teachers at a local middle school to design interventions that promote students’ comprehension and application of scientific concepts. She also is co-leading a DoE-funded project is examining the reading development of elementary students with intellectual disability over time.
In 2017 Professor Roberts received the Tom E.C. Smith Early Career Award from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities. She also co-authored a publication that received the CEC Teacher Education Division’s Early Career Publication Award. Her publications include “Misunderstood teachers, marginalized students: Deficit thinking about teacher expertise” in Teaching and Teacher Education and “Using content area literacy strategies during shared reading to include comprehension of high school students with moderate disability on adapted science text” in Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities.
